I sat down with a little lump of clay intending to sculpt a bear cub.

The first rough little bear looked quite cub-like. But as the little bugger began to take shape, I found myself adding more and more roly-polyness to the body, delighting in that rounded belly and butt until I suddenly realized…this was no longer a cub.

Which got me curious: What makes a cub look like a cub?

I began looking much more carefully at photographs and realized that young bears are surprisingly awkward and angular… not nearly as round and cuddly as the bear emerging beneath my fingers. So I pulled out three fresh lumps of clay and began experimenting; roughing out three little cubs forms. Two of them eventually became the sibling pair that are now part of my Palm-Size Bronze family.

But this delightfully jolly, roly-poly, honey-and-bug-filled Bear was far too precious to abandon.

And apparently Momma Nature approved. The very morning I officially introduced Bear to the world, a beautiful black bear wandered past our cabin. Magically the wild itself had come by to give me a little wink.

Each Bear is cast in solid bronze, individually finished and patinated by hand, so no two are exactly alike.
