My grandmother’s home was filled with delightful and delicate little treasures.

On the windowsill above her kitchen sink sat a beautiful deep cobalt-blue glass bird, magical to me with tiny bubbles suspended inside the glass. Another little bird, this one porcelain, perched on a doily beneath a lamp in her small, cozy and carefully curated living room.

Years later, I found myself thinking about that porcelain bird as I began sculpting Little Bird.

At the time, my oldest niece was graduating from high school, standing at that wonderful threshold between the familiar world of home and everything waiting beyond it. I modeled Little Bird after my grandmother’s bird, but lifted the wings ever so slightly and suspended the tail in the air in that fleeting moment just before takeoff.

She was about to spread her wings.

Despite those wonderfully chubby cheeks and belly, Little Bird emanates a delicate, perched-bird lightness. Yet nestled into the warmth of your hand, she has the startling and impressive weight of solid bronze.

Perhaps that contradiction is part of what I love most about her… rooted and weighty, yet poised to fly.

Each Little Bird was cast in solid bronze, individually finished and patinated by hand, so no two are exactly alike.
