These two little Cubs came about almost by accident.

I had originally sat down to sculpt a bear cub, but the little lump of clay beneath my fingers became rounder and rounder until my intended cub had turned into the delightfully roly-poly Bear who is also part of this collection.

That left me wondering: What actually makes a cub look like a cub?

Looking more carefully, I realized young bears are wonderfully awkward and angular… longer-legged, less filled-out and somehow not nearly as cuddly-looking as we imagine them to be. So I began experimenting with three fresh lumps of clay, sculpting three little cubs simultaneously.

And then something curious happened.

As their personalities emerged, two became completely captivated with one another. The third somehow seemed…well…a little left out. (Isn't that sometimes the way with three?)

The intimacy between these two felt so natural that I simply couldn't separate them. They had come into being together and, as far as I was concerned, they needed to venture out into the world together too.

So these siblings are - and always will be - a pair.

There is something about that little tangle of bodies that speaks to the comfort of belonging: companionship, familiarity, play and the particular kind of love found in someone who has been right there beside you from the beginning.

Each pair of Cubs is cast in solid bronze, individually finished and patinated by hand, so no two sets are exactly alike.
