My love affair with rabbits began with FuFu.

I was a little girl living with my family in a trailer park in Wyoming when I rescued a baby cottontail in our yard. I named her FuFu and carefully fed and cared for her myself.

When I was five, our family packed up and moved to Montana and of course FuFu came too. Still a baby, she made the journey in a big cardboard box between my feet on the floor of either the station wagon my mom drove or the U-Haul truck my dad drove, depending upon which vehicle I was riding shotgun in.

At one point FuFu seemed to get motion sick, which bonded me to her even more. I've always been prone to motion sickness myself. Apparently we had that in common.

I've now lived at the end of the road near the top of a Montana mountain for more than three decades. Living this close to nature, you begin to notice its cycles. Some years are “moth years” or “rabbit years” or “moose years” - years when certain creatures seem to be everywhere, followed by years when they become strangely scarce.

And rabbits cycle.

I love their bright curiosity, those alert ears and the utterly ridiculous bursts of joy when they suddenly leap, twist and spin through the air.

Random leaps and spins. Pure joy.

Suki grew from my lifelong delight in these bright little beings. Life-size and full of personality, she has that contemplative alert presence of a rabbit poised between stillness and motion, as though at any moment she might simply bound away.

My heart still does a little bunny dance when I see this curious charmer perched on our coffee table - I especially love the tilt of her head and the curve of her backside.
